MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) said it will crack down on teachers and other school personnel who are selling goods such as sweets and processed meat to students.
Dr. Luz Almeda, DepEd-National Capital Region director, said there have long been implementing rules and guidelines on the operation and management of canteens in public elementary and high schools.
She said the rules say that food must only be sold via the school canteen, which can be run by a school operator, teacher, cooperative or accredited concessionaires.
If teachers have food businesses, they may sell their food, which must be safe to eat and nutritious, via the operator or cooperative which runs the canteen. Junk food is not allowed in the canteen.
Meanwhile, the DepEd said it has no control over street food sold outside the school.
